A new Begining

After an very long break, we are back at it again. We are glad people are coming to the forums for some help, I have to admit I haven’t been checking them a lot after the holidays (like maybe once a week eek!) I promise to check everyday now. As you know we are doing a new release in gnome now. Still no time stamp on that (expect one soon). We are implenting a few neat new ideas. Not to mention polishing Xpress Linux up a little. We really believe we will be able to push Xpress Linux even further with Gnome interface. It seems so much more customizable and expansive. We do however have some mock up shots for everyone courtesy of Mike,

As you can see clicking computer, up in the left hand corner you are presented with a menu that displays basic info about the computer and a few categorized applications.

Also we are working on a new applications menu that allows you to view thumbnail shots of items in certain groups.

Hope this holds everyone over, sorry about the slow posting period. But since we are back in full production expect a few posts a week.

-Enjoy

Download Mirrors

Due to heavy traffic, Dreamhost had to limit the number of connections to our download server. I’ve set up several mirrors, which should relieve the problem. Going to the download link will now redirect you to a page where you can select a mirror to download from. To avoid problems in the future, please don’t link directly to any files. Instead, link to our download page.

Upcoming Release

We have a new release ready to go on Dec. 26, when we get back from the holidays. This one has several changes:

  • As a few people suggested, I’ve added a Show Desktop button.
  • MPlayer Plugin is now installed for Firefox, which will let you play embedded Quicktime and other media formats.

New Beta (UPDATED)

A new beta is now available, which fixes the update problem with the 12-8 release. You can download it here. If you’ve already installed the 12-8 release, you *may* be able to fix it by entering the following in the terminal before doing the update:

sudo apt-get install -f xpresslinux-settings

Major changes in this version include Firefox as the default browser, additional repositories added, new menu arrangement, and a menu item for Wine’s file manager to easily your Windows drive.

Also Mike is going to give the site a new look soon, we feel it is getting too cluttered and we are moving to a new organized format (possibly a meebo widget also!).

BTW the Ads by google on the side are there to produce money to start a CD operation to start sending you guys out CD’s of Xpress Linux (free).

as all ways send all the bugs and or just general email to either [email protected] or [email protected].

Post Beta

Download is right here
Well you folks are as loyal as it gets, in three days we have around 347 downloads! Okay now onto a newer topic, What About The Final Release?

Im so glad you asked, well we have a lot on our plate to finish in roughly 20 days, but so far we know we must, fix all the labeling issues, integrate Flash and Java out of the box, Documentation, main menu configure, and a repository. A lot of that is done already. Currently I am running it for Q&A and havent found too many issues, so its looks now that we will be releasing on December 30th. And if we are lucky maybe before Christmas.

On a second note we also have the full name for the release, Xpress Linux Black Advent. Also we have a small surprise for you all about the next release (sometime after Christmas) , we are making Xpress Linux in Gnome!

****Taylor’s Notes****

Okay guys havent had internet all week, but at 6:01pm on Friday Dec 1 I got it. I have been checking out this version on Xpress Linux and I have to say I am very happy with it, I just installed it and I fell in love with it (creepy I know) but mainly I just wanted to tell you folks out there that are a few more key things going into the final release that arent in the public beta, also if you find any bugs that you would like to report please do so at [email protected] or [email protected]. Also I have to give props to Chris Haney for emailing me and doing some screen shots for us and also providing us with a mirror (will be up soon). Hang in their guys (73 downloads in under 24 hours) you are the best community an indie team could ever ask for.

Almost there!

Well now I have a Live CD copy of Xpress Linux in my hands, and while it may not be complete yet it is very awesome. The new theme looks very nice its very brushed and modern looking, its just small things that really impress me, like how when I scroll over to the close button it fades silently into red. The programs it comes with are very standard but nice nonetheless I really appreciate the Wireless Assistant LAN manager, it works flawlessly. Also I had direct access to all my files on a Windows PC easy through Konqueror, unfortunately we are not finished with the wine setup so the programs didnt work off the bat but you had to install them (Note: this should be fixed in the final version). There is still no installer, but that will be there soon. So everything is on schedule and expect the November 30th release date (maybe even earlier!)

Project M

I decided to take another sub project in the mean time, I decided to call it Xpress Linux M. I took ubuntu with the gnome interface and made it look more like OSX. It will have all the same things as Xpress Linux will except it will run in Gnome instead of KDE and it’s default setup is a Mac OSX styled theme, enjoy the screen shots, I will keep you posted on Project M, there is currently no beta release date.
